Today was a very full day. Sam, Sarah, Gabi, my aunt and I left the house at 9am to go to Sam and Sarah’s farm which is across Lake Victoria. Once we got to the farm, we were immediately greeted by some calves that were grazing and then Gabi showed me her rabbits and then the 1,540 chickens and the 45 baby turkeys. Then Sam took us on a tour of the pastures, and we got to see all the cows and get up close and personal with the cows which were kind of scary considering one charged at us, but the farmhand we were with steered it away. Then we walked to where they keep the pigs which are pretty far away, and I got sunburnt on the walk. While walking to see the pigs, Sam showed us where they create their own bio-gas and where the digesters are. On our walk, Sam told us all about the cows and the pigs and their butcher shop that they own where they sell all their meat. We got to the pigs and saw the pregnant pigs, 11-day old piglets, and 2-month-old piglets. And, while we were with the pigs, we saw so many little monkeys swinging in the trees!! That was a pretty cool thing to see.
After the monkeys and pigs, we went up to Sam and Sarah’s house they have on that side of the lake and sat for lunch. We talked about the Ugandan economy and politics which was very interesting to hear Sam’s view. While we were relaxing, we saw an enormous 8ft Monitor lizard running through the yard while being chased by the 6 guard dogs! It was terrifying. A bit later we saw Fred, who works at the farm, and he was dragging the now dead lizard back up to his house, and he stopped to show it to us, so he threw the lizard up onto the terrace and Gabi and I both screamed. Sadly, Fred had to kill the lizard because it was eating the young geese that lived on the farm. That was definitely a first for me.
Hours for the day: 9
Hours in total: 39.5
Oh my goodness....a lizard that is 8 ft and eats baby geese! What in the world! I'd love to hear more about the economy and politics Sam was talking about!
