Day Four: Uganda: Last day at the Nangabo Technical Training Center

4:21pm, May 3rd, 2019
The kettle corn is the closer popcorn and then
the regular popcorn is the farther popcorn
Today we got up at the same time as yesterday. We went to the training center nice and early because today was the last day that people would be in school before they break for three weeks. I immediately went off to play with the kids, but there were fewer children today because some had traveled home for the holiday, so it was a bit more relaxed today. After playing with the kids for a while, I went to help the older women and my aunt make popcorn, reusable bags, and bags out of used bike tires. The head chef gathered the ingredients, and we started off trying to make kettle corn which burned a bit but was still very good and then just regular popcorn with salt. Later, Jackie the principle, lead the tutorial on how to iron the plastic together and make the bags. All of the women quickly picked up the skill of cutting the bags and then ironing them together and then sewing pieces to make a bag.

We then gathered into the middle nursery classroom for a performance. The young kids put on two dance performances and then the older girls put on two dance performances, one of them being a traditional dance. It was so lovely and fun to watch. Jackie then gave us some gifts that had been made at the center. My aunt and I each got a little purse, shoes, a bracelet, and earrings. Then I had to say goodbye to all the children with a heavy heart before we went back to Joyce's.

  1. Mimi - did you try to make a tire bag? I'm curious about the process and what they are used for?
