Traveling

Traveling

7:09pm, April 28th, 2019
Right now I am sitting at a charging hub in Terminal E of the Boston Logan Airport. My flight to Amsterdam, Netherlands and then Entebbe, Uganda boards in approximately 20 minutes. My airtime will be about 17 hours before my Aunt Sarah and I reach our destination of Uganda late tomorrow night. I am beyond excited and nervous to embark on this journey of a lifetime and experience and see things unlike anything I have before. I am greatly honored that I will be visiting and working at the school that my recently passed grandmother had such a large impact on. With her recent passing this trip means so much more to me than my senior project. It is a way for me to visit a place that is so close and dear to my grandmother and famille’s heart.

I am currently sitting on an airplane, about two hours into my 11 hour flight to Entebbe, Uganda. Before my flight my aunt and I met a 32-year-old man with a Dutch name that people who are not Dutch cannot pronounce so he insisted we just call him Joe. We met him while waiting in line for some food in Amsterdam before we got on our flight to Uganda. We quickly learned he was going to Uganda as well. We sat down with Joe and before I knew it we were all learning each other’s life stories and sharing jokes. We spoke about Amsterdam, politics, the Avengers Endgame, how our new friend was in the Dutch army and now works for the Ministry of Defense, we showed him my prom pictures and learned about why he was going to Uganda. Just by this encounter I can already tell how my trip will go with my aunt and I am far more than excited for what lies ahead.

Quick update. I arrived at out family friend Remi’s house about two hours ago. Remi picked us up from the airport in Entebbe and she had a sign and some flowers there to greet us with. Then we drove about an hour to Kampala where Remi lives. We got a tour of the house and then Remi prepared us a small dinner of lentils, chicken, rice, and potatoes. Then we just caught up and talked for a while. Before we went to sleep Remi wanted to roll out our legs and feet with a ball because our feet were so swollen from flying. Now I am happily sitting in my bed waiting to go to sleep which is long needed!!

Until tomorrow
-Maria
